Fondant Project Class

Last night I went to the All in One Bake Shop in Austin, and took the Fondant Project Class. The cake was a simple design, but I learned some great decorating tips!
Here are the fondant loops for the top bow.  We added Gum Tex to the fondant we used on the bow, to help it dry quicker.  I was amazed at what a difference this makes!

We covered the cake with a crumb coat, then let it sit.  Next we covered it with white fondant, and decorated it with the bow strips and loops.  I used the paisley impression to give the fondant a fabric look.  It's not my favorite look, but it was good to try a new technique.
I used my new Wilton rolling pin for the first time, that was interesting!  I did not like it as much as my old trusty wooden one, and my hands were sore this morning, go figure.  So, I'm not convinced it is better!  You can see the new rolling pin here in the picture, it's white plastic.  Hope you like my finished cake from the Fondant Project class!

Buttercream Dreams 9/25/09

Last night was day 3 of my wilton cake decorating class. We are learning to make shapes and designs with buttercream. I started out with homemade yellow butter cupcakes, with chocolate chips. Very yummy. I had to taste a one right out of the oven!

The frosting was made using palm oil, powdered sugar, water, wilton's meringue, and food coloring. I try to stay away from trans fats, so this is a great alternative.

The class was so much fun! I learned how to make little bear faces, a baby face, grapes and clowns.

For the brown, I actually used cocoa powder. This worked great!

I've worked with buttercream before but this is the first time that I've taken any formal training. I really enjoyed it and our teacher is a sweetheart.

I loved this little design of a baby peeking out of a pram.

You know what they say- presentation is everything! So, if I really want to get good, I have to be able to make the cake beautiful as well as delicous!

let them eat cake

Le Gateau du Chocolate

yum!

This is a 4 layer chocolate cake, with creamy pudding filling and a fudgy butter frosting.

It is all made from scratch! It is the best chocolate cake I have ever tasted!

I will make this again!
